Nice video Sascha. Do you mind if I ask what are your reasons for using the knife stamp with the sculpt tool rather than just using the knife tool itself?
hi genericamusingname. perhaps its kind of personal preference. i think the use of the sculpt brush is a bit more controllable than the knife tool. the knife tool always feels a bit harsh and too direct.
Hi! Loved the tutorial. Perhaps this is too much of a request, but can you make a quick tutorial or give some tips on a workflow to make some larger rocky surfaces?
your technique here is good, but that is for 1 rock, and if you are going to make a whole cave or mountain wall, this method would be rather tiresome. Rocky walls/caves is something really useful to know for environment modelling!
Simply excellent tutorial right here. As a game artist still getting more practice on sculpting organics, this is a godsend, and your workflow feels much more simplified and just works. New follower. :D
Great tutorial. I have watched it few times and I'm very nice surprised about It's ease to follow and apply. Because I'm not a Mudbox user so a had to use different kind of tools to achieve such result. As for result... stone alone isn't too much interesting. Here is a 'live' example, that technique of procedural props is very effective. in these scenes there is just ONE type of stone: http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/7784/42288829.jpg http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/224/65134300b.jpg http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8288/93007438.jpg http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/3763/84321568.jpg http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/1650/10978967.jpg Thank You VERY much for this tutorial :) Screens comes from our cRPG demo "Black Ice Tales", where I'm level artist and 3D coordinator.

Hey Sascha,
ReplyDeleteDo you mind explaining your material setup in Mudbox? I noticed the rock looks amazing in the thumbnail preview of the video.
I hope to use this technique in my next CE3 environment scene.
Thanks!
Im just starting working in Mudbox and this helped me alot. Thank You
ReplyDeleteOn this the video I learned how to create a stone texture. Many thanks to Sascha for the lesson.
